💰 To Follow On or To Not Follow On? 💰

A deep-dive into follow on funding when investing in early-stage startups

"The conventional wisdom is that you want to reserve follow on money, in order to double down on your winners." - Cheryl Mack

On the latest episode of the First Cheque podcast, co-hosts Cheryl Mack from Aussie Angels and Maxine Minter from Co Ventures discuss the intricate balance between optimising returns and supporting growing companies at various funding stages.

Maxine and Cheryl discuss different investing methods across funding cycles while exploring their implications on strategy, fund management, and the power-law in startup investing.

Listen to the new episode and learn more about why investors choose to support startups throughout their funding cycles on the First Cheque podcast.

In this episode, Cheryl and Maxine discuss the pros and cons of two different approaches to follow on funds - A) investing and being prepared with separate funds to follow on at every funding round for the startup, or B) investing in just the first funding round and getting a large stake of ownership in the startup.

📝 Gov Submissions Could Spark Change for Aussie Early-Stage Startups 📝

There could be big upcoming changes in early-stage startup investor requirements in Australia which has caused major feedback from the startup sector. The government have suggested increasing asset requirements from $2.5M to $4.5M and income requirements from $250K to $450K.

There have been high-profile critics arguing against raising thresholds, warning it could starve startups of essential funds - and First Cheque co-host Cheryl Mack has been a part of the community leading conversation about how this will impact the startup ecosystem.

Apparently the government have had just 5 submissions about the proposed changes so far - and final submissions need to be in before Wed 15 May.
